The town of Fumay, with its slate-mining culture, has lots of typical houses.
There are houses built in Givet blue stone and slate, but also brick and Dom stone (ochre limestone extracted from the region of Charleville-Mézières).
The houses also have a specific shape rectangular and at the beginning of the 20th century, L-shaped and T-shaped houses. Another typical element of the Fumay house is the cellar which opens at ground level and the individual front door with a fanlight.
YOU HAVE TO SEE : Fumay was the capital of slate-mining and has kept its 18th century houses.You will learn about the hard life of the slate miners from the beginning of the exploitation to the definitive closure of the pit.
THE FRESCO "The SCAILLETEUX" : This is the name given to the men who extracted the blocks of slate from the mines and cut them to make exploitable blocks. In honour o their memory, the town of Fumay commissionned the artist G.A Favaudon to make a fresco of slate and concrete, which is situtated at the entrance of the town.
